Moscow was hit by a significant wave of drone strikes overnight, according to the city’s mayor on Tuesday. This incident comes less than two weeks after a large-scale aerial assault targeted the Russian capital.
Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported multiple waves of drone activity beginning Monday night. In a Telegram update, he stated that Russian air defense systems intercepted more than 60 drones and noted that emergency crews were dispatched to various crash sites. No injuries have been reported at this time.
While the origin of the drones remains unconfirmed, Ukrainian authorities have not yet issued an official comment regarding the incident.
The aerial activity prompted Russia’s federal aviation watchdog, Rosaviatsiya, to briefly implement emergency flight restrictions at major Moscow-area airports on Tuesday morning to ensure safety.
The agency later announced via Telegram that both Moscow Domodedovo and Zhukovsky International Airports had resumed operations within two hours of the initial restrictions.
This strike follows a major Ukrainian drone operation earlier this month that targeted a prominent oil refinery, resulting in injuries to at least 17 people and the temporary shutdown of all four Moscow airports. During that event, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have intercepted nearly 1,000 drones nationwide.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky previously characterized recent strikes as a response to Russian attacks on a monastery complex in Kyiv, a claim Russia disputed by stating the damage was caused by a stray Ukrainian interceptor missile.
This is a developing story.
