Massive Fires Trigger Mass Evacuations Across France and Spain Amid Record Heatwave

Tens of thousands of residents were forced to abandon their homes Friday as fierce wildfires consumed large swaths of western France and eastern Spain, intensified by record‑high summer heat across the continent.

Authorities in southwestern France ordered the evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula, a beloved Atlantic seaside resort. As flames raced toward the area, hundreds of locals and tourists escaped by boat.

Firefighters are wrestling with what Nouvelle‑Aquitaine prefecture head Sophie Brocas called an unusually unpredictable “XXL” blaze. She likened the fire to another in the Landes department, dubbing them the “two ogres of the summer.”

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said the total displacement in France exceeds 60,000 people.

In Spain, fires near Madrid have forced over 19,000 residents to evacuate and have scorched nearly 15,000 acres as of Friday afternoon, threatening nearby communities.

Regional President Isabel Díaz Ayuso declared, “This is the worst wildfire in Madrid’s history.” She stressed that “our priority is to save lives, nothing else,” and said authorities are racing to evacuate towns under threat.

Spain’s government has asked the European Union for extra assistance, having declared a national emergency for the Madrid fires.

Spain’s Interior Minister Fernando Grande‑Marlaska warned, “We cannot be optimistic. Today is a critical day.” Officials fear that several active fires could merge into a single, larger conflagration.

The blazes in France and Spain are part of a continent‑wide wildfire surge this summer, driven by record‑breaking heat waves that have swept across Europe since late May. Last month marked the hottest June ever recorded in Western Europe, according to the EU’s Copernicus climate service.

Two weeks earlier, a wildfire in southeastern Spain’s Almería province claimed 13 lives, making it one of the nation’s deadliest fires ever documented.

France has also endured unusually intense fires. President Emmanuel Macron remarked a few weeks ago that the country has “never faced so many outbreaks of fire across the nation since the end of World War II.”
