For nearly two millennia, a vast Roman structure remained buried beneath Budapest. Archaeologists have now uncovered its remains, though its original purpose remains uncertain.
Dating from the third or fourth century AD, the structure extends for hundreds of metres before ending in an enigmatic polygonal tower. It may have been a significant public building associated with the Roman military, but its thin walls make a fortress unlikely. It also does not appear on any surviving maps.
