Mastodon reemerged this June with “Your Ghost Again,” a tribute to late former member Brent Hinds. Hinds, often the most recognizable figure in the band, exited under contentious terms last year. He died in a motorcycle crash less than six months later, reframing the group’s ongoing work without him.

The band has now announced the full project. “Your Ghost Again” served as the first glimpse of Marrow Deep, Mastodon’s first record without Hinds and their first since 2021’s Hushed And Grim. Drawing inspiration from the Three Fates of Greek mythology, the album features Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders, and Bill Kelliher alongside guitarist Nick Johnston, with keyboardist João Nogueira contributing significantly. Mastodon co-produced the album at their West End Sound studio in Atlanta with Patrik Berger (Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX) and Kurt Ballou (High On Fire, Converge). Loma Vista will release it next month, and the band promises an extensive roster of guest artists to be disclosed in due course.

For the newly released single “Snakes For Dinner,” Mastodon enlisted Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, most recently heard in a duet with Shania Twain. The collaboration underscores Homme’s versatility. He previously appeared on Mastodon’s 2006 track “Colony Of Birchmen” from Blood Mountain, and his presence feels even more integrated this time around.

Troy Sanders offered the following reflection:

Bill, Brann, and myself are thrilled that we still have the opportunity to do this, and we’ve got other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with us. That’s a magical feeling that makes us keep wanting to go to band practice. It’s reminiscent of the very beginning of our band, where all members are hungry, we’re united, and excited to get to work. And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to do this record.
