Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere to qualify for the World Cup since 1974, became the first team assured of missing the knockout stage. Brazil, meanwhile, delivered the decisive performance it needed on Friday.
Cunha, the Manchester United standout, started the match and celebrated each goal with his signature surf‑inspired routine, underscoring why he deserved a place in the lineup after Brazil’s lackluster 1-1 draw with Morocco. Coach Carlo Ancelotti had initially introduced him as a late substitute.
Fans in the 68,324‑strong crowd at Philadelphia Stadium erupted when Cunha tapped in a rebound for his first World Cup goal, then later struck a left‑footed shot into the upper left corner to make it 2‑0 in the first half.
Brazil forward Raphinha, who left the field with an injury, had an early goal ruled out for offside, briefly dampening the yellow‑clad supporters’ enthusiasm in the festive atmosphere at the home of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Haitian supporters sang their traditional battle cry “Grenadye Alaso,” while Brazilian fans responded with chants celebrating their nation’s five World Cup titles and legend Pelé.
Cunha’s surf celebration delighted the Brazilian community in Philadelphia, which includes nearly 6,000 immigrants.
Vinícius Júnior, whose 32nd‑minute goal secured Brazil’s lead against Morocco, helped set up Cunha’s first goal when his shot was saved by goalkeeper Johny Placide and Cunha deflected the rebound for 1‑0. He later delivered a pass that allowed Cunha to power a high shot into the net for the second goal.
Vinícius added another goal before halftime, giving Brazil a comfortable lead as they continue their quest for a first World Cup title since 2002. Their next Group C match is against Scotland on Wednesday in Miami Gardens, Florida.
Neymar missed Brazil’s second match due to a lingering calf injury.
