According to Matt Hardy, AEW President Tony Khan did not always share the same enthusiasm for Being The Elite during his tenure with the promotion.
On the latest episode of the Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, Hardy said he noticed signs that Khan was occasionally unsettled by certain elements of Being The Elite’s presentation and some of the Young Bucks’ in-ring choices.
“It also shows how influential Being The Elite was in so many ways,” Hardy explained. “I know there were times when Tony wasn’t completely comfortable with Being The Elite and some of the things the Young Bucks did.”
He continued, “But I’ve always been a strong advocate for them and their storytelling. I’m always behind Being The Elite, and I love it when you’re having fun with what you do and don’t take yourself too seriously.”
Hardy acknowledged that pro wrestling sometimes calls for a serious tone, but emphasized that the business is also “outrageous” and benefits from humor and comedic risk-taking, qualities he associates with The Young Bucks.
“I actually just interacted with the Young Bucks this week doing that,” he added. “It was back and forth, kind of the same thing: ‘Hey man, just want to let you know I miss you guys, I love you guys,’ and the same thing came back from myself and Brother Nero. I’m a big fan of those guys and a big fan of everything they’ve done. They’ve broken so many barriers and done so many amazing things, especially starting AEW. That’s probably the top one.”
The former TNA World Tag Team Champion also praised AEW Full Gear, saying he was impressed by how the event’s concept was tied back to Being The Elite and how the group helped weave storytelling into the show.
