Tonight on Eye on Africa, we examine the ongoing conflict in Sudan as the United States calls for strengthened United Nations sanctions, report on the cancellation of Mawlid celebrations in Tigray following recent drone strikes, and cover the gold rush in the Kenyan village of Cheporor.
The festive celebrations of Mawlid, the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, have been cancelled in parts of Ethiopia’s Tigray region due to recent drone attacks that have raised serious security concerns. Local authorities opted to suspend public gatherings and communal prayers to prevent potential casualties amid the ongoing volatility, shifting the observances to private, domestic commemorations.
While the Tigray region observes the holy day in quiet reflection due to the recent hostilities, Muslim communities across the rest of Africa celebrated Mawlid with traditional grandeur, vibrant street processions, and communal prayers, highlighting a contrast between conflict and cultural resilience.
