First, it’s unlikely Max Verstappen experiences sleepless nights given his successful career, personal life, and options beyond Formula 1. However, his current struggles in F1 are clearly affecting him. In just one year, his position at the pinnacle of motorsport has declined sharply.
A year ago, Red Bull appeared to offer Verstappen a promising future, even if their performance wasn’t dominant. The team’s strategy to wait for optimal regulations in 2027 seemed logical. Now, that flexibility is gone.

Mercedes has firmly rejected Verstappen’s potential move, with Toto Wolff emphasizing satisfaction in his current lineup: “We don’t want to change things. Our current drivers are performing well.” George Russell and Kimi Antonelli provide strong, cost-effective options, making a switch to Mercedes less appealing.
McLaren also shows no interest, citing satisfied long-term contracts with Norris and Piastri. Ferrari, despite renewing Leclerc’s deal, is unlikely to pursue Verstappen due to Hamilton’s resurgence and Leclerc’s current form.
Red Bull remains Verstappen’s only viable option, though his confidence in the team has waned. After a poor qualifying session where he finished seventh behind teammate Isack Hadjar, he criticized the car’s lack of speed and balance: “It’s embarrassing, it’s bad.” He even wanted to make adjustments in the pits but was overruled by the team.
During the race, Verstappen faced similar issues, culminating in a dramatic crash five laps from the finish. His frustration was palpable: “This fucking car, unbelievable,” he raged. Team principal Laurent Mekies acknowledged the problem: “It’s unpleasant for drivers to be let down by the car in consecutive races.”

Verstappen’s dissatisfaction has created tension at Red Bull. Despite successes in other areas—like Racing Bulls’ performance and F2 driver Nikola Tsolov’s wins—his unhappiness overshadows everything. A potential exit would be a blow to Red Bull and F1 but could benefit other series.
