Mayank Yadav arrived on the international stage in 2024 as a raw, high-speed talent at just 22 years old. However, his momentum was quickly halted by a series of injuries that sidelined him, leading him to reflect on the significant hardships he faced at such a young age. Despite these setbacks, his drive to represent India remained steadfast, culminating in a standout Player-of-the-Match performance during his comeback in the first T20I against Zimbabwe.
“It was incredibly difficult; the two-year gap was a major challenge because time was not on my side,” Mayank explained following his 2 for 18 spell in Harare. “I was only 22 or 23. I felt like I had to endure a lot of struggle so early in my career. Even so, my motivation to play for my country never wavered. I was determined to make a comeback and perform at my previous level.”
India utilized a youthful pace attack for the opening game of the three-match series. Prince Yadav, making only his fourth T20I appearance following a tour of the UK, joined debutant Ashok Sharma in the lineup. Mayank himself has only featured in three international matches, leaving veteran Shivam Dube, with 71 T20I caps, as the most experienced seamer in the squad.The Indian bowling unit proved dominant, reducing Zimbabwe to 26 for 3 during the powerplay and claiming five of the seven wickets lost. Mayank and Prince contributed two wickets each, while Dube took one. Although Ashok Sharma remained wicketless, he delivered an impressive performance in his international debut.
Regarding his communication with the other young pacers, Mayank noted, “We don’t discuss pace constantly, but we share a strong bond. Having bowled the opening over today, I shared insights with Prince and Ashok regarding the conditions and the best attacking lines. After the first six overs, we were in a commanding position, so our discussions focused on how to increase the pressure and which variations to utilize.”

After limiting Zimbabwe to 125 for 7, India secured a dominant seven-wicket victory. This marked India’s first win since their T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year and Shreyas Iyer’s first victory as captain after seven unsuccessful matches. Mayank expressed feeling “confident” and “free” playing under Iyer’s leadership.
“I hadn’t spoken to him much prior to the match,” Mayank said. “But during the game, he showed great confidence in the bowling unit. I appreciated how he backed my tactical choices.”
“When he offered advice, I felt confident executing it as it seemed like the right option at that moment. I felt very comfortable playing under him. This was my first time playing under his captaincy; I had previously only watched him on TV or leading other sides. It was a great experience.”
“His batting is extraordinary,” Mayank added. “When I bowled to him, he played shots that you wouldn’t typically see from such an inexperienced young player. Watching him bat is a pleasure.”
“His talent at this age is remarkable. I never imagined a 15-year-old would be able to dominate like that. It is a privilege to have him in the team, especially after he played so well against us when we faced Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.”
