The catchweight has been set at 148 pounds—six pounds below the standard 154-pound limit for the super welterweight division. Mayer has indicated that she must return to 147 pounds afterward or risk being stripped of her titles. Meanwhile, her most recent discussions with Claressa Shields suggest a potential future fight at 160 pounds rather than 154, according to comments made by both fighters this week. Because the IBF belt is held by Oshae Jones and is not part of this contest, the winner will be unable to claim undisputed status.
Mayer has explained that the 148-pound catchweight was chosen to preserve her ability to return to welterweight, where she believes she has unfinished business. Still, she has not ruled out a future showdown with Claressa Shields at 154 pounds.
The only major title in the division not at stake on Saturday is the IBF crown, which is currently held by Oshae Jones. A bout between Jones and the winner of Mayer-Cameron remains a possibility down the line.
Mayer previously held the WBO title but vacated it before moving up in weight. Cameron, meanwhile, moved up from super lightweight and defeated Michaela Kotaskova to claim the vacant WBO belt. This weekend’s fight offers Mayer an opportunity to reclaim a title she never lost inside the ring.
