Maryland Representative April McClain Delaney secured victory in a closely contested Democratic primary on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press, holding off a costly challenge from former congressman David Trone, who invested his personal wealth in an aggressive bid to regain his former seat.
With her win, Ms. McClain Delaney, a lawyer and former Biden administration official, will move on to the general election for Maryland’s sixth congressional district, a seat that remains solidly Democratic and for which she is seeking a second term.
The campaign became one of the costliest primaries in recent history, as the top contenders raised $35 million—more than any other House race in 2024—by June, with most of the money coming from loans that candidates made to their own campaigns.
Ms. McClain Delaney’s primary adversary, former Representative Trone, contributed $25 million of his own to challenge the incumbent he had previously supported. After Trone left Congress for an unsuccessful Senate run in 2024, he endorsed Ms. McClain Delaney to fill the vacancy.
Trone’s campaign centered largely on Ms. McClain Delaney’s January 2025 vote for the Laken Riley Act, a Republican‑backed bill that would require federal law‑enforcement agencies to detain undocumented immigrants accused of certain crimes without bail.
Ms. McClain Delaney, the sole Maryland Democrat to support the measure, has since expressed regret over that vote. She has stated that her record should reflect a “100 percent” stance against Trump‑era ICE policies, despite having voted for the Act shortly after the former president took office.
Campain manager Nick London explained that Ms. McClain Delaney had initially voted for the Act out of a sincere desire to address safety concerns after a local tragedy, but that her opponent’s narrative has skewed her record in the public eye.
Ms. McClain Delaney benefited from the backing of the Maryland Democratic establishment, securing endorsements from virtually every prominent state Democrat.
In the final weeks, well‑known elected officials—including Representative Jamie Raskin and Senator Chris Van Hollen—appeared in her advertisements, touting her as a “progressive and effective” candidate. The campaign also drew over $500,000 in support from the crypto‑focused super PAC Protect Progress, and she leveraged her personal wealth, loaning her campaign $7.4 million.
The district is a long‑standing Democratic stronghold, having given former Vice President Kamala Harris a 10‑point margin in the 2024 election. Ms. McClain Delaney’s family also has deep roots in the area; her husband, John Delaney, held the seat for three terms before his unsuccessful 2020 presidential campaign.
