Senator McConnell casts his first vote since June, reaffirming his commitment to pivotal Senate decisions.

United States Senator Mitch McConnell has resumed his duties in Congress, casting his first vote since being hospitalized three months ago following a fall at his Washington residence, which had sparked concerns about his capacity to continue serving.
“I must admit that after two decades of evading your questions, I was uncertain about how many of you would be here today, but I am grateful to see them. Now it is time to get back to work and finish this Congress’s agenda,” McConnell stated to reporters outside the Senate chamber on Monday.
The prolonged absence from public view of the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican generated significant concern within the Republican Party.
However, he quelled the speculation on Monday by posting a statement on social media to confirm his return.
“Today, I will cast my first Senate vote since taking a bad fall back in June,” he wrote on X. “I am truly looking forward to returning to the Senate floor and reuniting with my colleagues.”
He acknowledged that he is “not quite back to 100%,” noting that the lasting effects of “childhood polio” complicated his recovery. However, he assured his colleagues that he would do his “best to be present” for critical votes “when our conference needs me”.
Apprehensions had been mounting within the Republican Party that his absence could detrimentally impact the party, which maintains a slim 53-47 majority in the Senate.
Democrats had already leveraged his absence to pass a resolution opposing US President Donald Trump’s war with Iran, a move supported by four Republicans who defected from the party.
McConnell, the longest-serving Senate leader in US history, announced early last year that he would not be seeking an eighth term.
Kentucky’s Democratic governor, Andy Beshear, previously questioned McConnell’s ability to serve out his final term, which concludes in January 2027.
