England head coach Brendon McCullum has emphasized that the well-being of Ben Stokes takes precedence over any decisions regarding his future as Test captain. These comments follow the announcement of England’s playing XI for the second Test against New Zealand, scheduled for Wednesday, June 17.
Stokes has faced significant scrutiny following reports that he and fast bowler Gus Atkinson violated team curfew and were involved in a nightclub altercation last Monday. Both players are currently under investigation and have been ruled out of the upcoming match at the Oval.
The incident has cast doubt on Stokes’ leadership, leading to Joe Root stepping in as interim captain for the second Test. When questioned about the all-rounder’s future, McCullum asserted that the current priority is Stokes’ mental and physical health, noting that leadership discussions will be deferred until a later date.
“What will be will be down the line. Those decisions are not for now. The concern is making sure Ben is fine. We need to make sure we look after him, rally around him, and in time we’ll get on to those sorts of decisions. For me, I’m just making sure I’m checking in with him. That’s where things sit at the moment,” Brendon McCullum told BBC Sport.
“Our concern is with Ben, our concern is handling that situation, making sure we look after him, that he feels supported by us and in communication with us. Those other things will work out down the line,” McCullum added.
While McCullum has offered his support, he stopped short of guaranteeing that the Durham player will retain the captaincy. This ambiguity is compounded by the fact that England’s Managing Director, Rob Key, has also refrained from endorsing Stokes as the long-term skipper. However, Key did indicate that Stokes remains a viable part of the national squad once the official investigation is completed.
