Conor McGregor will undergo surgery following a knee injury sustained during his UFC 329 comeback fight against Max Holloway in Las Vegas, but remains optimistic about competing again.
The former two-weight world champion suffered the injury early in the bout when an awkward landing occurred after attempting a jump kick. Though he initially tried to continue, he eventually signaled to the referee that he could not proceed.
“All things work out for my good! All things are possible for me because I am a believer!” McGregor posted on Instagram. “Surgery. Prehab. Return to martial arts practice. Go again. Final fight of the contract. Please God!”
UFC president Dana White confirmed the injury likely involved a torn ACL, stating, “We’re assuming a blown ACL. That’s what I saw, and the doctors agree.” He noted no prior injury was evident during the ceremonial weigh-in, adding that the high viewership would have likely highlighted any pre-existing issue.
McGregor’s manager, John Kavanagh, corroborated this, writing on Facebook: “The opening jump switch kick was drilled daily for months, even in warm-ups. Never an issue. The knee gave way on the first kick. This couldn’t get worse.”
Following the fight, McGregor reiterated no prior injury: “I was throwing kicks, planting, jumping—during camp and backstage before the fight. No injuries/injuries going in.”
