Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, the world number two golfer, made footwear adjustments and added extra padding as he finalized preparations for the year’s second major. He explained that he addressed a toe issue by “separating the little toe from the other ones” with cushioning, and also switched to a larger, wider shoe with a softer toe box, going up half a size to a wide fit for more room.

Despite the demanding and undulating 7,394-yard walk at Aronimink, McIlroy reported no pain while hitting shots. He expressed pleasant surprise at how comfortable his foot felt, noting that while walking downhill could occasionally cause minor discomfort as his foot slid forward, it was “totally fine” overall. He dismissed the earlier concern as “a mountain out of a molehill.”

McIlroy, fresh from successfully defending his Masters title at Augusta last month, is scheduled to begin his attempt to win a third US PGA title at 13:40 BST (08:40 local time) in a group that includes fellow major winners Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm.
