West Ham United have faced intense criticism following a disappointing start to their Championship campaign this season.
The Hammers drew their opening fixture against Burnley before suffering a surprising 2-1 loss to Charlton Athletic at home. These results have intensified scrutiny on manager Nuno Espirito Santo, who previously struggled to prevent West Ham’s Premier League relegation last season.
Despite expectations of challenging for promotion this term, the team’s performances—yielding just one point from six available—have prompted urgent calls for improvement.
Personnel Changes Under Fire as West Ham Struggles
In his BBC Sport column, analyst Aaron McLean criticized West Ham’s “rock bottom” start in the second tier. “They were relegated last season due to shortcomings, and now they’re hitting their lowest ebb,” McLean wrote. “Their display against Burnley was uninspiring, and today’s defeat to Charlton—a seasoned Championship side—was a harsh reality check.”
“Missing a penalty at home against 62,000 fans shouldn’t be necessary to earn a point,” McLean added. “The mentality and possibly the squad composition need significant upgrades for West Ham to succeed this season.”
Nuno Acknowledges Fan Disappointment
Manager Nuno Espirito Santo personally addressed the setback, admitting he let supporters down. “The pressure is constant here,” the Portuguese manager said. “With 62,000 fans in attendance, we failed to meet their expectations.”
While key players like Mateus Fernandes, Crysencio Summerville, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka departed this summer, West Ham retained stars such as Jarrod Bowen, suggesting sufficient squad depth to compete.
“The crowd is for us, and we let them down today,” Nuno stated. “We couldn’t deliver what they deserved—a victory.”
