Alfred Lam, a medical student at the University of Hong Kong, credits his extensive volunteering with elderly and disadvantaged communities for shaping his approach to medicine. This experience has taught him to look beyond symptoms and focus on understanding the patients he may one day treat.
He is a finalist in the youth category of the Spirit of Hong Kong Awards, which recognize unsung heroes and organizations whose contributions might otherwise escape public attention. The awards, co-organized by Sino Group and the South China Morning Post, highlight impactful community work. Lam was nominated by the NGO HandsOn Hong Kong.
Lam’s volunteering journey began in secondary school through HandsOn Hong Kong programs, which involved food collection and meal distribution. He dedicated much of his time to supporting older individuals, particularly those living alone or experiencing dementia.
