Millions of Americans enrolled in Medicare are set to receive $90 payments from the federal government this month, an initiative designed to help offset rising health care costs for seniors. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), more than 20 million Medicare beneficiaries are eligible for these one-time payments, with most expected to arrive via direct deposit on or around October 8.
President Donald Trump announced the payments on October 2, aiming to help seniors cover the rising costs of Medicare Part B premiums, which fund services including doctor visits and outpatient care.
The funding for these payments comes from the Medicare Improvement Fund, which was established by Congress in 2008 to support improvements to traditional Medicare. According to CMS, the standard monthly Part B premium rose to $202.90 in 2026, up from $185 the previous year. While the $90 rebate covers roughly 44% of a single month’s standard premium, it does not permanently lower beneficiaries’ overall costs.
Why are seniors receiving $90 payments?
The payments are drawn from the Medicare Improvement Fund, created by Congress in 2008 to support traditional Medicare improvements. The White House noted that Congress allocated $2 billion to the fund, highlighting that this represents the first time the money has been used for direct payments to beneficiaries.
The standard monthly Part B premium increased to $202.90 in 2026, up from $185 last year, according to CMS. This initiative marks the first time these funds have been distributed directly to beneficiaries to help offset the rising cost of premiums.
Who qualifies for the $90 Medicare payments?
While most Original Medicare Part B enrollees living in the United States qualify, certain groups are excluded from receiving the payments. According to CMS, those whose premiums are paid by Medicaid, higher-income beneficiaries who pay an Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA), and Medicare Advantage enrollees are not eligible. Seniors can verify their eligibility by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
When will the $90 Medicare checks arrive?
Most eligible beneficiaries can expect to receive their payments via direct deposit on or around October 8. For those without direct deposit set up, paper checks will be mailed out by the U.S. Treasury Department later in October.
According to CMS, the payments will be clearly identified with a message reading, “Medicare Improvement Fund Payment; $90 Payment to Offset October Premium.” Beneficiaries can check the status of their payments by contacting the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 starting October 15. It is important to note that these $90 payments are separate from regular Social Security benefits and are a one-time, non-recurring initiative.
