Medicare’s GLP-1 Weight Loss Drug Program Offers $50 Monthly Access Through 2027]
Medicare is introducing a new program that could significantly reduce the cost of GLP-1 weight loss drugs like Wegody, starting July 1, 2026. For the first time, Medicare will provide access to these medications at a fraction of their typical cost.
Under the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge demonstration program, certain GLP-1 drugs will be available for just $50 per month—a dramatic reduction compared to Wegody’s wholesale list price of $1,349.02. This pricing surpasses even the best manufacturer discounts and pharmacy savings programs.
However, the program comes with important limitations. The Bridge program lasts only 18 months, running through December 31, 2027. Originally designed as a temporary measure while a longer-term solution was developed, the program’s extension came after the delay of the BALANCE model, which was expected to provide ongoing coverage.
The program requires beneficiaries to have a Medicare Part D plan or Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage, though GLP-1 drugs are not technically covered under these plans. Instead, the Bridge program functions more like a coupon system, meaning the $50 copay does not contribute toward annual deductibles or out-of-pocket maximums.
Despite these caveats, the program represents significant savings for Medicare beneficiaries. In 2024, Medicare spent over $19.3 billion on Ozempic and Mounjaro, the diabetes-approved versions of weight loss drugs. With approximately 14 million Medicare beneficiaries having obesity, expanding coverage could substantially increase federal healthcare costs.
The future of GLP-1 coverage remains uncertain beyond 2027. While CMS could potentially extend the Bridge program, cost considerations and industry participation in the delayed BALANCE model will likely shape future coverage decisions.
