Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ team principal, has refuted speculation about shuffling the driver roster, stating clearly that the team intends to keep the current pairing of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli at the front of the grid for the foreseeable future. The comments came ahead of the Austrian qualifying session, when Wolff laid out his confidence in the duo.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Wolff emphasized stability: “We don’t want to change things. We’ve conveyed that to George as well. I think this line‑up works for us. I’m very pleased with both of them.”
The remark sparked lively debate on social media. Many fans welcomed the reaffirmation, noting that keeping the drivers avoids the complications of bringing in a high‑profile outsider such as four‑time champion Max Verstappen.
“Makes sense. Ideal for Toto is for Kimi to dominate while George stays on board. He won’t be tempted by another 2016, and Max is an expensive proposition to bring back those years,” one Reddit user wrote.
A different commentator echoed the sentiment: “They have a solid 1st and 2nd driver; there’s no need to disrupt the arrangement.”
“They’re both exceptional drivers and have been with Mercedes for years. I don’t want Kimi to leave, nor George,” one fan added, adding a desire for more discipline in the team’s strategy.
Nonetheless, some respondents cautioned that Wolff’s assurances do not close the door entirely. “’We have no plans to change’ isn’t the same as ‘we won’t make a change.’ If something unexpected occurs, the team may still act,” one fan remarked. Another commented: “They’ll stay put unless a form‑shifting driver emerges.”
Such sentiments underline that while the current arrangement appears secure, the dynamic nature of Formula One means future adjustments could still occur.
