Mercedes continues to investigate the root cause of George Russell’s energy‑deployment problems at the Belgian Grand Prix, even after adjusting his driving approach, which resulted in a loss of straight‑line speed to his teammate.
Russell’s engineers have been puzzled by insufficient energy deployment and consequently reduced top speed on circuits that rely heavily on power, an issue that first surfaced at Silverstone and resurfaced at Spa. During practice and qualifying, Russell trailed his teammate Kimi Antonelli, who secured pole position, while Russell ended up fourth.
When questioned by Motorsport.com about his sense of powerlessness after qualifying, Russell responded: “My sole focus over the past 36 hours has been on straight‑line speed. I have not concentrated on setup or tyre choices, as the team works to uncover the underlying cause.”
Even on his final lap, Russell lost an additional 1.5 seconds on the straight despite being fully throttled, noticing a drop in speed on his steering readout. He described feeling powerless, admitting that the team does not yet understand the issue. He suspects it is not the power unit but rather some other factor limiting straight‑line performance.

Qualifying at Spa proved especially disheartening for Russell, who had hoped to resolve the issue by modifying his driving style and throttle application following the post‑Silverstone analysis.
Mercedes deputy technical director Simone Resta noted that the Brackley team remains unable to fully comprehend every factor contributing to Russell’s energy‑deployment shortfall, despite the driver’s efforts to adjust his style.
‘We have encountered problems with the energy deployment on George’s car that we must fully understand and resolve before the next event,’ Resta explained. ‘These issues originated at Silverstone, where we observed divergent deployment characteristics between our two cars.’

He added that the team is navigating a brand‑new regulatory framework, now in its tenth race, and remains eager to pinpoint every contributory factor. He acknowledged that many teams face similar challenges, and they will strive to identify the primary cause and be optimally prepared for the upcoming Hungarian round.
Separately, both Mercedes cars endured a sluggish start in Spa after exhausting their electric energy on the Kemmel Straight, a setback that allowed rival Ferraris to overtake Russell. The ensuing pressure led to contact with Lewis Hamilton at Turn 5, ultimately retiring Russell from the race.
Resta confirmed that a software glitch caused both cars to hit their energy‑harvest ceiling exiting Turn 1, depriving them of deployment capability on the following straight.
‘Essentially, a software issue caused both cars to reach the harvesting limit at Turn 1,’ Resta added. ‘Consequently, from Turn 1 to Turn 5 both vehicles experienced boost problems, which cost George and Kimi ground despite making strong starts.’
