Meta Platforms Inc. (META) announced late Wednesday that it will invest more than C$13 billion in Canada to build the country’s first data center optimized for AI workloads.
The company is breaking ground on the new 1‑gigawatt, AI‑optimized facility in Sturgeon County, Alberta, aimed at powering AI innovations and core products.
The project, which will be the 33rd addition to Meta’s global data‑center fleet, is expected to employ over 3,000 construction workers at peak and create more than 300 permanent operational positions.
As part of the initiative, Meta also plans to allocate roughly C$60 million for local infrastructure improvements and to provide grants and funding to area nonprofits.
Meta noted that it covers the full cost of electricity, water, and wastewater services required by its data centers, ensuring no adverse impact on consumers.
Regarding the Sturgeon County facility, Meta said it has collaborated with Greenlight Limited Partnership, Altalink, Capitol Power, and the Alberta Electric System Operator to secure energy resources well ahead of the center’s launch.
