Japanese investment firm Metaplanet transferred 3,881 BTC—valued at approximately $247 million—across a series of transactions spanning three hours on Wednesday, according to blockchain analytics platform Arkham Intelligence.
The assets moved from the company’s existing cold storage into newly created addresses also under its control, rather than to a cryptocurrency exchange. Because transfers to fresh self-custody wallets do not increase the tradable supply in the manner of exchange deposits, the on-chain activity does not, by itself, indicate an intent to sell.
This pattern mirrors a similar operation in March, when Metaplanet relocated nearly 5,000 BTC through test transactions followed by larger bulk movements into new wallets. At the time, analysts interpreted the maneuver as an internal custody restructuring rather than distribution. Wednesday’s on-chain data offers no evidence suggesting a different motivation.
Metaplanet accumulated its roughly 43,000 BTC holdings at an average price near $96,000. With Bitcoin trading around $63,600, the firm is currently sitting on an unrealized loss of approximately $1.4 billion, representing a 34% decline on its investment.
Since April 2024, Metaplanet has ranked among the most aggressive corporate accumulators of Bitcoin, publicly targeting a total treasury allocation of 210,000 BTC.
