The New York Mets optioned right-handed reliever Jonah Tong to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday while recalling fellow right-hander Joey Gerber from the same club to bolster their bullpen.
Gerber will provide depth for the Mets’ relief corps following a demanding stretch that saw New York use six pitchers in their 3-2, 10-inning loss to Seattle on Monday and four additional pitchers in Tuesday’s 8-3 setback to the Mariners.
Tong struggled in his most recent appearance, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits—including a home run—over 3 1/3 innings of relief in Tuesday’s game.
The 22-year-old Tong fell to 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA across three relief outings this season after being promoted from Syracuse last month.
A seventh-round selection by the Mets in the 2022 MLB Draft, Tong made his major league debut last season with a 2-3 record and 7.71 ERA in five starting assignments.
Gerber, 29, demonstrated solid effectiveness in his only appearance with New York this year, recording five strikeouts over two scoreless relief innings in a no-decision against the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 13.
In Triple-A and Double-A this season, Gerber has posted a 1-1 record with an 8.22 ERA in 14 total appearances (one start).
