“We have the chance to do the impossible.”
After Mexico’s decisive win over Ecuador secured a place in the round of 16, many of their fans began looking ahead to who they might face next.
England’s upcoming last‑32 match against DR Congo on Wednesday promises a tough challenge, and even a victory would not simplify the path forward.
Should England advance, they would meet Mexico at the legendary Azteca Stadium—a prospect that excites neutral observers while intimidating England’s supporters.
Although Mexico has never progressed past the World Cup quarter‑finals, their performance in this edition—four matches, four victories, eight goals scored and none conceded—has ignited hopes among supporters of a deeper run.
“England have the Ballon d’Or favourite Harry Kane leading that team,” one fan said.
“You have players like Jude Bellingham, and it is scary, but with the momentum we have there is the chance to do the impossible.”
Considering their World Cup form and their formidable record at the Azteca, a deep run for Mexico seems far from out of reach.
At the Azteca, Mexico boasts a record of 70 wins, 17 draws and just two losses in 89 matches, including an unbeaten streak of ten World Cup encounters.
While the calibre of opposition Mexico has faced at the Azteca has varied, any team meeting them in the round of 16 will face a stern test.
“The whole nation is behind them – we’ve seen the scenes,” former Australia and Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said on ITV.
“If it will be England going down to Mexico, it’s going to be like stepping into a different World Cup for them.”
