Michael has claimed the title of highest-grossing music biopic ever at the global box office, overtaking Bohemian Rhapsody. The film, which charts Michael Jackson’s rise from the Jackson 5 era through the Bad World Tour, has generated $911.9 million (£680 million) worldwide since its April release. Starring Jackson’s real-life nephew Jaafar Jackson in the lead role, it achieved the strongest opening weekend debut for any music biopic.
Though Bohemian Rhapsody—the 2018 Freddie Mercury and Queen biographical film—earned $910.9 million globally and shared producer Graham King with Michael, the new record holder now has a path toward the $1 billion milestone, particularly following its recent Japanese rollout.
A sequel is already in development, with Lionsgate confirming plans are underway. Meanwhile, director Troy Kellings’ original ending faced significant changes due to legal restrictions; a $50 million reshoot was required after discovering a clause prohibiting mention of Jordan Chandler, one of Jackson’s accusers. This led to a complete restructure of the film’s third act.
Despite these behind-the-scenes challenges, Michael received a mixed reception, with NME awarding three stars and describing it as “a slick, accessible advert for Jackson’s incredible imperial phase.” The film’s closing scene features Jackson performing at Wembley Stadium in 1988, followed by the text: “His Story Continues.” CriticsHave also noted potential complexities ahead for expanding Jackson’s story further, given ongoing legal matters—including the April 2028 trial date set for James Safechuck and Wade Robson, who accused Jackson of child sexual abuse in the 2019 documentary Leaving Neverland.
