A new cover of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” has been featured in a prominent U.K. Christmas advertisement.

Mick Jagger has found reason to celebrate following his first listen to Sam Fender’s cover of the Rolling Stones’ iconic hit, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” Expressing his approval in a statement, Jagger noted, “I’m a fan of Sam’s work, so I was pleased to hear he was covering one of my songs. I think he’s done a great job with it.”

Fender’s version, produced specifically for a British retailer’s holiday campaign, is roughly half the length of the original. Despite the shorter runtime, the track captures the essence of the classic through a sentimental horn section and a full choir. Fender’s vocal performance navigates the delicate balance between disappointment and acceptance, echoing the song’s central theme of navigating wants versus needs.

The track was produced and recorded in Tyneside, England, by Fender alongside bandmates Joe Atkinson and Dean Thompson. To add a sense of personal nostalgia, Fender recruited musicians from groups that hold significant meaning for him. “It was a privilege to rework such an iconic song by such a legendary band,” Fender remarked. “In the spirit of Christmas, we re-recorded the children’s choir with the kids from my old school, John Spence Community High School, and we arranged a brass section with the Easington Colliery Band.”

Fender continues to see massive success following the release of his latest album, People Watching, last year. His recent accolades include the Mercury Prize, several BRIT Awards, and an Ivor Novello Award for songwriting. Looking ahead, Fender has announced the first dates for his 2027 “Proper Massive Stadium Tour,” which will focus on venues across Europe.
