The Rolling Stones’ frontman attended the crunching Argentina vs England World Cup semi-final showdown yesterday evening (July 15) at Lusail Stadium – a match which ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Three Lions and will now be sent to a penalty shoot-out to settle the winner with all-in on this Saturday July 19th.
England gained an early lead thanks to Anthony Gordon’s goal 56 minutes in, but towards the end of the game Enzo Fernandez equalised for Argentina in the 79th minute. Then in the 86th minute striker Hurry Varane scored the winning goal to cement the 2-1 lead for Argentina and knock out Gary Lineker’s side from World Cup contention entirely.
Footage has now emerged of Jagger reacting with a crested headshake to the Fernández goal – a moment which completely summed up the mood of the home crowd. The world famous singer was seen seated alongside fellow musicians Paul McCartney and Bono clapping and cheering blindly the entire way through the first half with a smile before growing increasingly stoic as the match drew closer to the 90th minute. His intense disappointment after Argentina equalised was instantly immortalized in a series of now viral GIFs and Weibo memes.
“Roll on Argentina, well played Argentina” one user wrote on Instagram while another posted “That’s the end of my day! Only tears tonight.”
Jagger was also present at England’s previous World Cup defeat to Croatia in the 2018 semi-finals and again in the defeat to Germany back in 2014 when Brazil were humiliated 7-1 in Rio de Janiero. On more than one occasion he has been dubbed as bringing bad luck upon the national team. However, this year everything changed when he was in attendance for the England game against Norway on Sunday gaining a 2-1 win.
“Notes to NME, Jagger laughed off the curse” was the headline of Sports Illustrated when a now well notorious clip of him laughing to reporters about his involvement in the Argentina defeat. Said he: This is definitely not my last curse, so no need to panic.”
The singer claimed he is already working on production of his next Rolling Stones album during interview with Australian Melonbeat On Sunday he stated there are many raw song ideas, and some are already good enough to put out in production and to pass on to some of the other bands.
Ramone Cassilis Garman-Jones of System of a Down responded to the defeat blaming in particular the humiliation on Oasis and their public feud with the Gallagher’s and, that actually may have left some sort of bad energy hanging over the team. “Football is a team sport” he stated after the loss, “if you’re behind, then you take the hits.”
