British right-wing political commentator Milo Yiannopoulos has been deported from the United States following his detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Yiannopoulos, 41, who once served as an editor at Breitbart News and briefly worked as a political adviser to rapper Kanye West, was removed from the country on Friday, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
A DHS spokesperson told the BBC that Yiannopoulos, described as “an illegal alien from the United Kingdom,” had been returned “back to his home country.”
Known for his provocative style, Yiannopoulos has often referred to himself as the “most fabulous supervillain on the internet.” His detractors, however, label him a promoter of hate speech.
Raised in Kent in southern England, Yiannopoulos was taken into custody on August 27 upon his arrival at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.
DHS officials stated that he had entered the US in May 2019 and “chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws.”
Yiannopoulos emerged as an early supporter of Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign, notably headlining an event titled Gays for Trump at the Republican National Convention.
Although he has since become a vocal critic of the US president, he continues to express support for portions of his political agenda. In a post on X this past March, Yiannopoulos claimed Trump had “lost his way, bought off by foreign interests.”
Over the years, Yiannopoulos has generated controversy through his remarks about transgender individuals, Muslims, the Black Lives Matter movement, feminists, and the gay community, despite having previously identified as gay himself. He now identifies as an “ex-gay.”
In 2020, he assisted Kanye West in the rapper’s unsuccessful presidential campaign. He also previously worked for Marjorie Taylor Greene, a former Republican congresswoman who later distanced herself from Trump before eventually resigning from office.
