Mississippi Mother Reels as Police Say Daughter’s Tree Hanging Was Staged

The mother of a 29-year-old woman found hanging from a tree at an abandoned home in Jackson, Mississippi, in August said she is left with more questions than answers after police revealed her daughter had been killed before the body was placed at the allegedly staged scene.

Authorities determined that Tasia Fortune, a mother of four, died from homicide and that the hanging was staged.

The Jackson Police Department said the medical examiner concluded Fortune was dead before being hanged, though officials have not disclosed the exact cause of death or a potential motive.

“I have more questions now than what I did before,” her mother, Christy Spivey, told the BBC. “Still no cause of death, no date of death — nothing. What actually killed her?”

Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, but police have not explained how they were linked to Fortune or why authorities believe the scene was staged.

The discovery initially sparked widespread fear in the majority-Black city given Mississippi’s history of racial violence and lynchings, and lawmakers have called for federal investigations. However, the latest revelations have deepened the confusion and anguish for the family.
