The highly anticipated AEW World title match between MJF and Kenny Omega was not originally scheduled to take place on this Wednesday’s Beach Break edition of Dynamite.
On the post-Dynamite edition of Wrestling Observer Radio (clip found below), Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez discussed the circumstances surrounding the match. Meltzer noted that the original plan had the bout set for this month’s Redemption pay-per-view in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
At the time of recording, neither Meltzer nor Alvarez understood the reason for the change, with Alvarez stating the decision was made “fairly recently.” Meltzer was also unclear why the International title match between Konosuke Takeshita and Kyle Fletcher is taking place this Wednesday instead of on a major event.
The stipulation for the MJF/Omega match is that if Omega doesn’t defeat MJF for the title, he can never challenge for it again. MJF holds a 2-0 record against Omega in their career rivalry, and the prevailing opinion is that Omega will win to set up a title shot against Will Ospreay for AEW All In at London’s Wembley Stadium.
