The Boston Red Sox have won 15 games in a row, tying their franchise record.
The franchise was hoping to tie the mark on Tuesday, but the game was postponed due to inclement weather. The Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles are playing a doubleheader on Wednesday, but Boston needed just the 6-3 victory in Game 1 to tie their team record.
Caleb Durbin got the scoring started on Wednesday afternoon. With the bases loaded, he hit a single to center field that plated two runs.
Jarren Duran then hit a triple that scored both Willson Contreras and Durbin. Duran helped Boston add another run in the bottom of the third inning with a sacrifice fly that allowed Durbin to score from third. Cedanne Rafaela knocked a solo home run in the fourth inning to put the Red Sox up 6-2 at halftime.
Starting pitcher Jake Bennett pitched well. He went 5.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on nine hits. Justin Slaten, Garrett Whitlock and Aroldis Chapman came out of the bullpen and shut down the Baltimore offense.
Boston’s streak goes back to before the All-Star break, beginning with a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on July 3.
At the time, the victory pushed the Red Sox to a 38-48 record. With the 15th consecutive win, Boston is now 52-48, firmly in third place in the AL East. The Red Sox’s initial 15-game win streak was accomplished by the 1947 squad led by Ted Williams. Boston finished that season 83-71 and missed the postseason.
The Red Sox will now have a chance to set their franchise record for consecutive wins on Wednesday night. Boston has yet to name a starter, but Baltimore will counter with Kyle Bradish, who recently got a five-year extension from the Orioles.
