When the Strokes released “Bad Decisions,” the second single from their 2020 album The New Abnormal, listeners quickly noted its similarity to Modern English’s 1982 hit “I Melt With You.” The new-wave veterans later addressed the resemblance in a short video captioned “We have beef with the Strokes.”
“Yesterday there was a band who was here, Mom Jeans,” Mick Conroy said, laughing. “One of them said, ‘Have you ever heard the Strokes?’” Robbie Grey replied, “Yeah, about 30 years ago. They actually ripped off ‘I Melt With You.’” Conroy added, “Yeah, they had a song and they completely ripped off ‘I Melt With You.’” Text overlaid on the video read, “just kidding we still love them.”
Writers of Billy Idol’s 1981 classic “Dancing With Myself” are credited on “Bad Decisions,” but Modern English are not. Olivia Rodrigo has nevertheless praised “I Melt With You” as a perfect wedding song.
