Former England all‑rounder Moeen Ali has cited the Indian parody of the IPL as a key factor behind India’s recent under‑performance in the T20 format. The Men in Blue suffered a 2‑0 series defeat by Ireland and now trail 2‑0 in a five‑match series against England.
Ali criticized the Impact Player rule in the franchise tournament, arguing that it has eroded the art of building a steady innings in T20 cricket. He said the rule forces Indian batters to keep slogging even after several wickets have fallen at the other end, believing they can always bring in an extra hitter later in the innings. The Yorkshire star maintained that the rule removes the need to pick a balanced side and undermines strategic decision‑making.
Ali also took issue with India’s decision to field Harshit Rana ahead of designated all‑rounder Shivam Dube during the 125‑run loss in Nottingham.
“The impact player makes a big difference in the IPL. I think they have lost the art of batting in T20 cricket. Whether you are three down, four down, or five down in the power play. Dube coming in at number eight and sending Rana ahead of him, I know it’s because he is a right‑hander, but you are picking a team full of left‑handers; you can’t just do that,” Moeen Ali said on the Beard Before Wicket podcast.
I will always come back to the impact player in the IPL. I think it is taking away the art of batting Arden and situations more than anything. You can’t just come out and keep slogging from ball oneробнее. You have to pick the team well. With an impact player, you don’t have to pick the team well and can just put in a batter or bowler. кои there’s no blah after picking a side to these conditions,” he added.
During the third T20I, India were chasing 202 and were bundled out for just 76, resulting in a heavy defeat. The manner in which the batsmen lost wickets – particularly in the power‑play overs – drew attention, with several players continuing to slog despite a collapse at the other end.
