Monaco and French authorities are actively searching for a suspect believed responsible for a detonation near a bustling area of the principality on Monday evening, which hospitalized multiple victims, including a local Ukrainian oligarch.
Emergency services responded at approximately 21:00 local time to reports of an explosion at a residential complex in central Monaco, according to a statement from Monegasque officials. Early reports indicated the blast originated from an improvised explosive device planted in the building’s lobby.

Initial assessments by Monaco’s Ministry of State identified the event as a deliberate attack before officials clarified it as a “willful explosion.” Three individuals sustained injuries of varying severity, with two adults in critical condition.
Among the wounded was Vadym Yermolaiev, a high-profile Ukrainian entrepreneur with ongoing business sanctions from Kyiv since December 2023. The injuries occurred near his flagged Monaco residence, officials confirmed.
Authorities reported the device contained metallic components including bolts and buckshot pellets, suggesting a makeshift construction method. Investigators are examining whether the explosive materials originated from legitimate supply channels.
Surveillance footage reviewed by French media Le Figaro shows an individual depositing a backpack at the building’s entrance moments before the blast. This aligns with forensic evidence indicating an external remains container was likely the delivery mechanism.
Monaco’s head of government, Prince Albert II, condemned the attack as “a despicable act that endangers our community’s security.” French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced cross-border coordination with investigators to trace the perpetrator’s movements.
On-site visuals captured by an AFP photographer revealed extensive law enforcement presence and aerial surveillance. The affected building remains cordoned off while bomb disposal units conduct residual hazard assessments.
