While many mark their 40th with a lavish dinner or surprise gathering, Gael Monfils chose a different celebration.
The French tennis veteran, known for his flamboyant on‑court persona, commemorated his milestone by securing a Grand Slam victory at the US Open.
Competing in what may be the final major of his career, Monfils delivered a memorable performance, defeating Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 2‑6, 6‑1, 6‑2, 6‑0.
This win makes him the oldest man to capture a US Open main‑draw match since Jimmy Connors, who also triumphed on his 40th birthday in 1992.
The New York crowd added to the festivities, breaking into an spontaneous rendition of “Happy Birthday” during his post‑match interview.
“Playing on my 40th birthday feels incredibly special,” said the 2016 US Open semifinalist, who announced last year that he will retire at season’s end.
“The atmosphere in New York is always electric—I feel at home here. I strive to play excellent tennis and entertain the fans.”
He thanked the thousands of supporters filling Louis Armstrong Stadium, adding, “You guys rock—let’s keep the energy going for the next round.”
