DENVER (AP) — Mickey Moniak fell a single short of the cycle, while Hunter Goodman launched a two-run homer to seal a pivotal four-run fifth inning as the Colorado Rockies defeated Miami 6-3 on Wednesday night, snapping an eight-game losing streak against the Marlins.
Moniak opened the scoring with his 14th home run of the season, a second-inning solo shot off Max Meyer (9-1), giving Colorado an early 1-0 lead.
After doubling in the third, Moniak delivered a two-run triple in the fifth to extend the Rockies’ advantage. Goodman then capped the inning with his 27th homer, matching Larry Walker’s franchise record for pre-All-Star break home runs, with 11 games remaining to surpass it.
All four runs charged to Meyer in the fifth were unearned following a fielding error by second baseman Javier Sanoja, which prolonged the inning. Sanoja had earlier provided Miami with a 2-1 lead in the fourth via a two-run triple off Kyle Freeland (2-7).
Joe Mack trimmed the deficit to 5-3 in the seventh with a pinch-hit inside-the-park homer off Juan Mejia, but Colorado answered in the bottom half when Kyle Karros blasted his sixth homer of the year—a 440-foot solo shot off Tyler Zuber.
Freeland (2-7) allowed two runs and six hits over five innings, striking out seven to help end a three-game skid. Mejia worked two innings, Jimmy Herget tossed a scoreless eighth, and Brennan Bernardino retired the side in order in the ninth for his first save of the season and second of his career.
Meyer yielded five runs (one earned) and six hits in six innings for Miami.
