Morne Morkel Highlights Value of Kohli and Rohit’s Experience Ahead of West Indies ODIs

India is preparing to welcome back two of its most seasoned cricketers, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, as they return to the One Day International (ODI) setup for the upcoming series against the West Indies. The experienced pair, who last played in the format during the series against South Africa in 2025, have been named in the squad for the upcoming fixtures.

With the return of Kohli and Rohit, focus has shifted to the wealth of experience they can inject into a side currently led by Shubman Gill. India’s bowling coach, Morne Morkel, recently shared his insights on the invaluable presence of senior players in nurturing the younger members of the squad.

Morkel warmly welcomed the return of the star batting duo, emphasizing the wealth of experience they bring to the Indian dressing room. He also lauded Shubman Gill for his exceptional leadership as the ODI captain. The bowling coach noted that different players often look up to different senior teammates, and having experienced veterans in the mix provides a prime learning environment for the younger squad members.

“It is always great to have that experience back in the team to guide Shubman as well. I must say, Shubman has done an exceptional job so far leading the team,” Morkel remarked.

For over a decade, Kohli and Rohit have been the cornerstone of India’s ODI success. Kohli boasts over 14,000 runs in the format, while Rohit continues to approach the prestigious 12,000-run milestone.

India’s Strategy of Mentorship and Learning

Morkel further revealed that the Indian team actively encourages its senior players to share their insights and experience during team meetings. The coaching staff provides ample opportunities for veterans to contribute and mentor the younger members of the squad. The return of Kohli and Rohit comes on the heels of India’s 1-2 ODI series defeat to England in July.

“We always throw out as many questions as possible in team meetings for the senior guys to speak and share their experience,” Morkel added.

Their wealth of experience will now be integral to the team’s preparation for the upcoming West Indies ODIs, offering a valuable opportunity for the senior duo to work alongside Gill in his leadership role.
