Activists say Moroccan authorities are intensifying repression of critical voices and the Gen Z protest movement.

Politically outspoken Moroccan artist, rapper, and filmmaker Mehdi El Youbi was arrested in Casablanca on Monday night, days after being denied entry to France, where he has resided since 2017.
El Youbi, known professionally as Mehdi Black Wind, was detained following an evening interrogation by Morocco’s National Brigade of Judicial Police in Casablanca, per a statement from his supporters. Authorities reportedly linked his arrest to his socially conscious artistic content and social media activity.
Born in 1992, El Youbi gained prominence in the early 2010s with rap tracks blending US hip-hop influences,which drew governmental scrutiny during the Arab Spring era.
“Upon my return to Morocco, I fear arrest or deportation,” El Youbi stated in a December 2025 interview with France’s Mosaique Magazine. “Artists and activists must navigate a delicate balance between courage and vulnerability.”

Algerian journalist Maher Mezahi remarked on X that El Youbi is “North Africa’s premier rapper, with no rival.”
Moroccan human rights advocate Omar Radi, previously detained for critiquing judicial figures, stated: “There’s a coordinated effort to suppress dissent in media, art, and public spheres, including football communities.”
El Youbi is scheduled to face the public prosecutor on Wednesday. His backers express concern he may appear without legal representation, as Moroccan lawyers are currently on strike.
