Morocco reaffirmed their status as one of world football’s most respected emerging forces after holding five-time champions Brazil to an entertaining 1-1 draw in their opening Group C match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Saturday.
At a packed MetLife Stadium in the New York metropolitan area, the Atlas Lions matched Brazil in intensity, organisation and attacking intent, earning a valuable point against the tournament’s most decorated nation.
Four years after becoming the first African country to reach a World Cup semi-final, Morocco showed they can still compete with the sport’s elite, delivering a disciplined and courageous performance against a Brazil side filled with international stars.
Morocco took the lead in the 21st minute through a move that highlighted their technical quality and composure in possession.
Brahim Diaz split the Brazilian defence with a perfectly weighted through ball, allowing Ismael Saibari to time his run and calmly lift the ball beyond the advancing Alisson Becker.

The goal ignited celebrations among Morocco’s supporters and gave the Atlas Lions a deserved advantage after a strong start.
Led by the influential Ayyoub Bouaddi, Morocco’s midfield controlled large parts of the early stages, combining calm distribution with intelligent pressing whenever Brazil tried to build from the back.
Brazil, however, responded with the quality expected of a perennial football powerhouse.
Vinicius Junior levelled in the 32nd minute, once again demonstrating his world-class ability. The Real Madrid forward received the ball on the left side of the penalty area, cut inside and drove a fierce right-footed shot past Yassine Bounou into the net.
It was a moment of individual brilliance that restored parity and left the teams deadlocked at halftime.
Brazil controlled more territory for much of the second half, with Vinicius, Raphinha and Lucas Paquetá probing for openings against Morocco’s well-organised defence.

Morocco never retreated, continuing to look for ways to break forward whenever the chance appeared.
Saibari thought he had restored Morocco’s lead midway through the second half after another dangerous move, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi introduced fresh legs as the match wore on, and although Morocco occasionally struggled to maintain possession under Brazil’s pressure, they remained dangerous in transition.
At the other end, Bounou again proved his value as one of the world’s most dependable goalkeepers, producing important saves to deny Paquetá and Raphinha and keep Morocco firmly in the contest.
Brazil goalkeeper Alisson was also crucial late on. Deep into stoppage time, he reacted sharply to save Neil El Aynaoui’s long-range effort before quickly gathering Ayoube Amaimouni’s rebound to preserve the draw.
The final whistle confirmed a result that will strengthen belief within the Moroccan camp.
Brazil remain among the favourites to challenge for the title, but Morocco left New York with further evidence that their rise is not a passing story but a sustained force in world football.

The Atlas Lions now turn their attention to upcoming Group C fixtures against Scotland and Haiti, knowing another performance of this standard could move them significantly closer to the knockout stages.
For supporters across Africa, Morocco’s opening-night display offered another reminder that the continent’s representatives are increasingly capable of challenging world football’s traditional powers on the biggest stage.
