MotoGP Australia Preview: Two-Point Title Fight Converges on Phillip IslandThe 2026 MotoGP championship is poised for another decisive chapter at Phillip Island.
The Island could deliver one of the season’s most consequential Grands Prix as the title fight reaches its final phase. Phillip Island first joined the MotoGP calendar in 1989 and has hosted the Australian Grand Prix since 1997, producing countless memorable finishes along the way. Before the race moves to Adelaide in 2027, one final visit could provide a defining moment for the 2026 championship. Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez are separated by only two points, and with five races remaining in six weeks, the title will ultimately be decided over a compact and demanding run.
Martin vs Marquez: The championship run-in intensifies
It would have taken a bold prediction to suggest that Marc Marquez would leave Mandalika with the same two-point deficit with which he arrived, yet that is precisely what the reigning champion achieved. An Aprilia 1-2-3-4 finish on Sunday, with Jorge Martin third, preserved the #89’s advantage. Although Aprilia was strong in Australia last year, the RS-GP represents new territory for Marquez. Another contest of the caliber seen in 2024, when #93 prevailed, would be welcome. Martin has recorded only one victory this season but has reached the Grand Prix podium in each of the last three rounds. Marquez, by contrast, has six Sunday podiums, all of them victories.
Bezzecchi’s resilience: Has he saved his best for the end?
Not long ago, Bezzecchi’s title prospects appeared to be fading. Like Martin, however, he has finished on the podium in the last three Grands Prix and returned to the winner’s circle at Mandalika. With five podiums from the last six races and a Sprint victory at Phillip Island in 2025, the #72 trails Martin by 46 points but remains firmly in contention. He is also 50 points clear of Ai Ogura, creating a realistic three-way title fight with five rounds remaining. At this stage of last season, Bezzecchi found an extra gear and carried that form into the early part of 2026. He will be hoping to reproduce that surge at Phillip Island.
The chasing pack: 2026 winners and Phillip Island contenders
Ogura sits fourth by a single point over Austrian Grand Prix winner Pedro Acosta, whose recent results in Japan and Indonesia have been difficult. The battle for fourth is now a four-way contest, with Fabio Di Giannantonio applying pressure and Raul Fernandez rekindling his campaign after finishing second at Mandalika. Di Giannantonio won his first MotoGP race at Phillip Island last year, providing a useful precedent for another competitive encounter in 2026. Alex Marquez, his teammate Fermin Aldeguer and two-time world champion Francesco Bagnaia complete the top ten. Aldeguer, however, remains sidelined because of the hand injury he sustained in Lombok and has again been replaced by Iker Lecuona.
Beyond the top ten: Miller prepares for his final home Grand Prix
Enea Bastianini is only two points behind Aldeguer in the fight for the top ten, while fellow Italian Luca Marini is 14 points further adrift and hopes to extend his run of scoring in every Grand Prix in 2026. Brad Binder is four points behind Marini and has finished in the top eight at each of the last three Australian Grands Prix. Yamaha frontman Fabio Quartararo has also scored points in the last two Grands Prix and Sprints.
Leading rookie Diogo Moreira is level with Quartararo on points and 15 clear of Franco Morbidelli, who in turn sits eight points ahead of 2023 Australian Grand Prix winner Johann Zarco. Particular attention at home will focus on Jack Miller as he aims to sign off from MotoGP with a strong showing at his home Grand Prix, where he narrowly missed the Sprint podium in 2025.
Miller’s teammate Toprak Razgatlioglu returns to a circuit he knows from WorldSBK and will be targeting his first points since Misano. Alex Rins is one of five previous Australian Grand Prix winners in the field, with Maverick Vinales also among them as he seeks to rebuild after a lengthy layoff. Honda has not yet confirmed Joan Mir’s participation as he continues to contend with illness.
The championship leaders are separated by only two points, Bezzecchi remains firmly in the hunt and five Grands Prix in six weeks lie ahead. Phillip Island is set to provide the next major test, with the Island’s farewell showdown potentially becoming one of the defining moments of the 2026 season.
