Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho has condemned the ongoing harassment faced by his winger Vinicius Jr., calling the situation an example of systemic “bullying” within football culture.
Controversy arose after Vinicius was accused of diving during a crucial moment of a 2-1 victory over Espanyol, which saw Real Madrid secure three points in Mourinho’s second La Liga match as their manager. Despite the win, Mourinho defended his player, addressing the broader context of vindictive behavior toward Vinicius.
Goals from Jude Bellingham and Carlos Espi ensured the victory, but Mourinho emphasized his support for Vinicius, who has faced repeated scrutiny. He referenced past incidents, including a Champions League racism case involving his former Benfica tenure, highlighting Vinicius’ resilience.
“I risk having my past comments resurfaced when I was opposed to Vini,” Mourinho stated, reflecting on his own history. “Now he’s my responsibility. He’s not perfect, but the treatment he receives is excessive. In the first minute alone, he faced a push and a kick from Cala.”
“There’s a recurring pattern here: opponents and even spectators perpetuate this cycle of bullying. Vinicius must develop emotional resilience. I’ve advised him to manage celebrations and recognize that we’re in an era of anti-bullying. Yet, with Vinicius, we’re still confronting old behaviors. We must educate him to navigate this challenge.”
Mourinho Reaffirms Belief in Real Madrid’s Merit Despite Narrow Victory
While acknowledging Espanyol’s organized defensive strategy and effective counterattacks, Mourinho expressed confidence that Real Madrid deserved the win. “We controlled the game with pressure and took calculated risks,” he said. “Though Espanyol played professionally and posed threats on the break, we earned this result. However, they didn’t deserve to lose.”
Looking ahead, Mourinho’s Real Madrid will face Real Sociedad at the Bernabeu on Wednesday, continuing their La Liga campaign after delaying their season kickoff compared to other top-tier clubs.
