Chennai Super Kings legend MS Dhoni could assume a significantly broader role within the franchise after Stephen Fleming’s exit as head coach, according to a report by RevSportz.

The report suggests Dhoni is being weighed for the position of team mentor and may also be tasked with supervising the franchise’s cricket operations as CSK embark on a new chapter following Fleming’s 18‑year tenure.

MS Dhoni could help appoint Fleming’s successor

According to the report, Dhoni is expected to play a major part in identifying and selecting Chennai Super Kings’ next head coach.

While it remains uncertain whether he will formally take on the mentor role ahead of IPL 2027 or in the subsequent season, sources told RevSportz that the former India captain is likely to receive greater responsibility behind the scenes.

The report further indicates that Dhoni could be granted full authority over the franchise’s cricket‑related matters as CSK look to rebuild after two underwhelming seasons.

CSK enter transition after Fleming departure

CSK announced on Monday that Stephen Fleming had mutually agreed to part ways with the franchise, concluding one of the longest and most successful coaching partnerships in IPL history.

Fleming joined Chennai as a player in the inaugural IPL season in 2008 before becoming head coach in 2009.

During his tenure, CSK captured five IPL titles, two Champions League T20 trophies, reached ten IPL finals and qualified for the playoffs on twelve occasions.

However, the franchise finished at the bottom of the table in IPL 2025 before another disappointing campaign in 2026, prompting a major overhaul.

MS Dhoni remains central to CSK despite injury‑hit season

Although Dhoni did not feature in IPL 2026 due to injury, he remains one of the most influential figures within the franchise.

The former India captain has continued to stay closely involved with the team and is widely regarded as the architect of CSK’s culture alongside Fleming.

If the report proves accurate, his role could become even more prominent as Chennai prepare for life after their long‑serving head coach.

No official confirmation yet

Neither Chennai Super Kings nor Dhoni has officially confirmed the reported changes.

The franchise is also yet to announce Fleming’s successor, with several names, including Hemang Badani, Rahul Dravid and Michael Clarke, having been linked with the vacant position in recent media reports.
