The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that a large-scale cyclospora outbreak tied to contaminated iceberg lettuce has now spread to Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas, bringing the total number of reported illnesses to 11,458 across 20 states since July. Health authorities have linked the outbreak, which has caused hundreds of hospitalizations and two fatalities, to iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico and distributed through Taco Bell restaurants.
The contamination has had significant economic impacts, with sales of leafy greens dropping as much as 30% during the outbreak’s early stages. Dave Ciesinski, president and CEO of The Marzetti Company, noted that consumer behavior has shifted dramatically, with shoppers rethinking fresh produce purchases. The company, which produces refrigerated salad dressings, also reported declines in vegetable and fruit sales.
Packages of Taylor Farms salad greens were recently removed from shelves by retailers like Safeway while federal investigators continue their inquiry. Symptoms of cyclospora infection include stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue, typically appearing one week after exposure. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that some individuals may experience recurring symptoms over time, though others remain asymptomatic.
The outbreak, one of the largest foodborne illness events in recent U.S. history, has particularly affected Michigan, which has reported the highest number of cases and the two confirmed deaths among individuals with underlying health conditions. Federal health officials emphasize the importance of following proper food handling and preparation practices to mitigate further risk.
