Democratic Senator Chris Murphy stated on Tuesday that the Department of Defense denied him access to a key military base in Qatar during a Middle East visit, characterizing the decision as part of a broader government effort to obscure the impact of the Iran war.
Al Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. installation in the region, has faced repeated attacks by Iran since the U.S.-led war began in February.
Murphy told journalists in Riyadh—his second destination—that the trip confirmed an “active, unprecedented, and unconstitutional effort” to conceal the war’s costs and implications from Congress and the American public.
Several members of Congress, including Republicans aligned with former President Donald Trump, have pressed the administration for greater transparency regarding war costs, strategy, and casualty figures.
A senior Pentagon official confirmed that Murphy’s office was warned prior to his trip that he would not receive support for base access, citing Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s March 3, 2026, directive restricting travel to the area. “The Department applies the Secretary’s guidance evenly,” the official stated in an emailed release.
Murphy asserted that the Pentagon declined to arrange a war briefing during his regional visit.
Reflecting on his Senate tenure, Murphy declared, “I’ve never encountered anything like this… it’s part of a deliberate campaign of obfuscation that my Republican colleagues in Congress should demand an end to.”
Murphy noted that Secretary of State Marco Rubio facilitated his visit, including arranging diplomat meetings, a contrast to the Pentagon’s restrictions.
During the trip, Murphy, a Connecticut member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, met with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and other senior Gulf officials.
