My Chemical Romance Tease New Record as King Diamond Makes Surprise Appearance

My Chemical Romance disbanded in 2013 and reunited in 2019. Since then, the band has played arena and stadium shows, performed its 2006 landmark album The Black Parade in full, and shared selections from its broader catalog. It has not released new music since reuniting, and its latest studio album remains Danger Days, the 2010 follow-up to The Black Parade. The band is now discussing the possibility of creating more music.

My Chemical Romance announced an expanded 20th-anniversary edition of The Black Parade on Thursday. During Saturday’s performance at San Antonio’s Alamodome, with The Mars Volta opening, frontman Gerard Way told the crowd that the band had long wanted to record another album. He said the group’s supporters had kept it alive for so long that they deserved new music, though he offered no release date.

The comments suggest a possibility rather than a concrete plan. Earlier this year, John Cameron Mitchell, the creator of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, discussed developing a secret theatrical project with My Chemical Romance, leaving open the possibility that the two endeavors are connected. The San Antonio concert also featured a surprise appearance from Danish heavy-metal vocalist King Diamond, the formerly face-painted singer and former frontman of Mercyful Fate. Diamond brought a sword onstage, knighted the band and joined My Chemical Romance for “Mama” from The Black Parade.

My Chemical Romance was formed after Gerard Way witnessed the September 11 attacks. His brother and bandmate, Mikey Way, later recalled seeing Gerard depicted in a newspaper article about the attacks. On the 25th anniversary of the tragedy, a Redditor located the newspaper, and a widely shared photograph appeared to show Gerard Way at the scene.
