Mystery Jets have released a poignant new track, ‘Soul River,’ from their forthcoming studio album, A Hole To See The Sky Through.
The critically lauded indie-rock band reveals that the song, set to debut on August 21 via Fiction Records, was inspired by the loss of a beloved local figure from their hometown of Eel Pie Island. The lyrics serve as both a celebration and homage to a life cut short by suicide, with lead vocalist Blaine Harrison describing it as one of their most emotionally resonant releases to date.
This latest offering follows the viral success of their lead single ‘Black Sage’ and the album’s title track, which have introduced the record to global audiences. The new song showcases the band’s ability to balance raw emotional depth with their signature psychedelic rock soundscapes.
Produced by Leo Abrahams—a collaborator with artists including Brian Eno and Frightened Rabbit—the album was recorded at Abrahams’ East London studio. It builds on the thematic evolution seen in their 2020 release A Billion Heartbeats, which drew from raw, grassroots perspectives, while exploring broader existential themes in this new work.
“‘Soul River’ reflects our journey toward healing,” Harrison stated. “This album confronts trauma and forgiveness while seeking cosmic clarity—a continuation of our exploration of ‘what lies at the edges of pain.’” The release notes the album’s visual identity, featuring a recreation of Yoko Ono’s iconic postcard art (with her consent), reinforcing its minimalist ethos.
Coinciding with the single’s release, the band announced a UK and Ireland tour, including headline shows at Glasgow’s SWG2 Studio Warehouse (November 22) and London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town. Tour dates emphasize venues fostering intimate fan connections, aligning with the album’s communal themes.
