Nancy Guthrie Abduction: Second Ransom Note Claims Inadvertent Death as Investigation Continues]
Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie, was apprehended following a mysterious abduction from her Tucson, Arizona home on January 31, with a subsequent ransom note allegedly claiming her death was inadvertent.
During her first appearance on NBC’s Today show since the emergence of a second ransom note, Savannah Guthrie addressed the development tearfully, urgently appealing for information: “Somebody knows something. We are in agony.”
Authorities have been investigating the case for months. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed ongoing collaboration with the FBI, stating they continue to “follow up on leads, review information, and pursue the facts surrounding this case.”
The investigation took a significant turn when law enforcement reportedly requested that media outlets refrain from publishing details of the initial ransom note while active. That note, addressed to Savannah Guthrie and sent to multiple media organizations, demanded millions in bitcoin and included specific details about the family home and Nancy Guthrie’s bedroom.
A second note emerged on February 6, reportedly containing similar language but without monetary demands. Instead, it allegedly apologized for Guthrie’s death and stated it was inadvertent. Following the notes’ release, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings released a joint video message directed at the perpetrators, pleading: “We received your message, and we understand. We beg you now to return our mother to us.” The family indicated they would pay whatever was required for her safe return.
Nancy Guthrie was dropped off at her home by relatives on January 31. Concern arose the following morning when she failed to attend a virtual Sunday church service with a friend.
