Naomi Osaka, making a strong comeback, stunned world number one Aryna Sabalenka in a commanding performance to secure her first Wimbledon quarter-final appearance.
The Japanese tennis star out-served, out-hit, and out-thought her fellow four-time Grand Slam champion, edging out Sabalenka with a decisive 6-2 7-6 (7-2) victory on Centre Court.
This result marks Sabalenka’s earliest exit at a Grand Slam since the 2022 French Open, and it ends her 122-match streak of avoiding straight-set losses.
Osaka’s triumph highlighted her resilience, as she visibly relished her victory, covering her racquet in disbelief after sealing the match on her second point.
The win also represents Osaka’s maiden Wimbledon last-eight appearance, following her recent return to form, including a first-round advancement at the French Open last month.
“It’s been a long time since I had so much fun on the court,” Osaka remarked. “To do it here means a lot.”
This encounter marked the fourth meeting between the two power hitters in three months, with Sabalenka having previously claimed three of the four matches.
Osaka displayed excellent court coverage and matched Sabalenka’s pace throughout the match, ultimately dominating the encounter.
Sabalenka’s premature exit continues her quest for a first Grand Slam victory of the year.
Osaka will now face Czech 10th seed Karolina Muchova in the semi-finals, while Muchova’s win over 2024 champion Barbora Krejcikova sets the stage for a new women’s singles champion at Wimbledon for the tenth consecutive tournament.
