Naomi Schiff Analyzes Red Bull’s Strategic Edge Following Dutch GP Driver Swap

Red Bull’s driver substitution at the Dutch Grand Prix has revived paddock discussions regarding the unique advantage of operating two Formula 1 teams under the same ownership structure.

After Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar suffered a wrist fracture in the run-up to the Zandvoort round, the Milton Keynes squad elevated Liam Lawson from the sister Racing Bulls team to partner with Max Verstappen.

To fill the vacancy created at Racing Bulls, reserve driver Yuki Tsunoda was promoted to team up with rookie Arvid Lindblad.

Former W Series champion and Sky Sports analyst Naomi Schiff emphasized the tactical benefit of calling up an active driver who already has extensive experience driving the current-specification machinery, rather than relying on a reserve driver with minimal track time in the car.

During an episode of the Up To Speed podcast, Schiff expanded on the depth of Red Bull’s talent pool after co-host and ex-F1 driver David Coulthard highlighted the squad’s ability to pull drivers from its sister team.

“It seems to be a little bit of an advantage to be able to put someone in who’s already currently driving these cars, and I guess Ferrari is the only other team that would probably call on Oliver Bearman,” Schiff noted.

She contrasted Red Bull’s setup with Mercedes, pointing out that while Fred Vesti travels to most races with the team, the junior driver pipeline provides a distinct competitive edge. “I do think it works out to be an advantage for Liam, but I think that doesn’t take away from the fact that stepping back into that environment was probably daunting for him, although the environment looks very different now compared to when he left,” she added.

Lawson concluded the Dutch Grand Prix in seventh position, successfully claiming six championship points for the team. It remains to be seen if Isack Hadjar will be cleared to return for the Italian Grand Prix.
